‘A great many people are born with a talent. But the question is: What do you do with your talent?’ Erwin de Vries lists the qualities that are required – in his opinion – to reach higher levels of creative art, apart from a fair share of creative talent. ‘First of all you should be obsessed by it; spend the entire day doing nothing but drawing, painting and working. Some people are born artists; they are quite different from others who exhibit their work and then hurriedly produce some more work. And, supposing you do have that drive and obsession, my next question is: how long before you give up?’
Erwin de Vries has kept the torch of his artistic calling aflame for many years now. He takes his first drawings lessons at the age of sixteen, as a student of the ELKA art school, led by Arthur Gorré and Egbert Lieveld. Uncle Wim Bos Verschuur encourages Erwin to have his first exhibition. And he goes on to convince Mr. De Vries that he ought to send his son Erwin to the Netherlands to study for a teacher’s degree in drawing. ‘Hardly two weeks after I had started studying in the Netherlands the teacher stopped at my desk, lifted up my drawing for everyone to see and exclaimed: “This is what I have in mind when I am talking about coloring!” At that moment I became aware that there was indeed some perspective for me. I went to school to learn, and almost right away my work was used as an example to show how it was supposed to be.’
Erwin de Vries has had two solo exhibitions in the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum. The first one was in 1970 and the second one was on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a creative artist in 1998. He exhibited together with world famous artists such as Picasso, Zadkine and Henry Moore. His work was exhibited in Mexico, New York and Jamaica. There are numerous sculptures by Erwin de Vries on display in the Netherlands, like for instance the Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden in the Oosterpark, Amsterdam. Sculptures on display in the open air in Surinam are De Ontdekker [stolen in 2011, MV] and a statue of the late statesman Jagernath Lachmon, LL M.
WOMEN
Women are the leitmotiv in De Vries’ oeuvre. The bold, full shapes, the magnificent movements and the intense coloring are typical of his style. He likes variations. ‘Sometimes my work is almost realistic, sometimes it is abstract. One day it is expressive and another day it is one-dimensional.’
PORTRAITS
Erwin de Vries paints swiftly, expressing his feelings. His colleagues praise his ability to capture the essence of his subjects intuitively.

To Erwin de Vries it is essential that one should reach beyond the borders of one’s country, one should broaden one’s horizons. ‘If I had remained in Surinam, I would now be standing at the Waterkant peddling paintings of waterfalls. And what’s more: where would I have acquired the knowledge and skills to make the enormous sculptures I have made?’

This monument was commissioned on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Centrale Bank van Suriname in 1987. It shows all aspects of production. The figures on top are the guards protecting the money.

‘Er worden ontzettend veel mensen met talent geboren. Maar de vraag is: Wat doe je ermee?’ Erwin de Vries vertelt over wat er volgens hem, naast kunstzinnige aanleg, nog meer nodig is om tot de hogere regionen van de beeldende kunst te stijgen. ‘Je moet er bezeten van zijn; de hele dag niets anders doen dan tekenen, schilderen, werken. Je hebt raskunstenaars, dat is een heel verschil met mensen die een expo hebben en dan gauw weer wat werk maken. En als die bezetenheid wél in je zit dan is de volgende vraag: Hoe lang houd je het vol?’
Erwin de Vries houdt de toorts van zijn kunstenaarschap al heel erg lang brandende. Zijn eerste tekenlessen volgt hij als zestienjarige bij de kunstopleiding ELKA, van Arthur Gorré en Egbert Lieveld. Oom Wim Bos Verschuur moedigt Erwin aan om zijn eerste expositie te organiseren en bemiddelt bij Erwins vader dat Erwin voor het behalen van de mo A-akte Tekenen naar Nederland kan gaan. ‘Ik was twee weken in Nederland en de leraar stond stil bij mijn tafel, hield mijn tekening omhoog zodat iedereen het kon zien. “Dit is wat ik met koloriet bedoel!” Toen realiseerde ik me dat het iets kon worden met mij. Ik kwam daar om te leren en binnen zo korte tijd werd mijn werk gebruikt als voorbeeld van hoe het moest.’
Twee maal heeft hij in het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam een solo-expositie gehad. Eerst in 1970 en vervolgens bij zijn 50-jarig jubileum als beeldend kunstenaar in 1998. Hij exposeerde met wereldberoemde kunstenaars als Picasso, Zadkine en Henry Moore. Zijn werk is tentoongesteld in Mexico, in New York, Jamaica. In Nederland staan talloze bekende beelden van Erwin de Vries, waaronder het Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden in het Amsterdamse Oosterpark. In de Surinaamse publieke ruimte staan De ontdekker [gestolen in 2011, MV] en het standbeeld van de staatsman Mr. Jagernath Lachmon.
VROUWEN
De vrouw is het hoofdthema van De Vries’ oeuvre. Kenmerkend zijn de krachtige, volle vormen, de grootse bewegingen en het intense kleurgebruik. Hij houdt van variatie. ‘Soms werk ik bijna realistisch, soms abstraheer ik. Dan ben ik plastisch bezig, en dan weer in het platte vlak.’
PORTRETTEN
Erwin de Vries schildert snel, vanuit zijn gevoel. Collega-kunstenaars roemen de wijze waarop hij de essentie van de persoon die hij portretteert intuïtief kan vatten.
ANTHONY NESTY
Over de grenzen van je eigen land kijken, het verbreden van je horizon, is volgens Erwin de Vries essentieel. ‘Als ik niet weggegaan was, dan stond ik nu aan de Waterkant schilderijen van watervallen te verkopen. En bovendien: waar had ik de kennis vandaan moeten halen om zulke enorme beelden te creëren als ik gemaakt heb?’

Dit monument is gemaakt ter gelegenheid van het 30-jarig bestaan van de Centrale Bank van Suriname, in 1987. De productie en al haar aspecten facetten zijn er op afgebeeld. De figuren bovenop zijn de wachters die het geld bewaken.
