Tu pakisei shows dilemma of people in diaspora
Tu pakisei is the third solo exhibition of visual artist Isan Corinde (also on Facebook), also known as ICo, at gallery Sukru Oso. A striking title: Tu pakisei, Saramaccan for ‘two thoughts’, of course refers to the state of mind of the emigrant Corinde. But Tu pakisei also is a metaphor for the dilemma with which he is struggling, like all other people in diaspora. He is at home in two countries. Or is not it?
Corinde paints, makes sculptures and objects. For a long time he drew his inspiration from his childhood in his birthplace Brokopondo. He referred in his work to his grandmother – and with that to his ancestors. With the broadening of his horizon he also chooses other subjects. Yet he keeps returning to his childhood. For example, he shows that his budding artist’s brain was already drawing letters and numbers at school.
The installation Futumaaka, with footsteps of family members cast in concrete, refers to the footprints that his grandmother recognized when she returned to the location of the village that had made way for the reservoir. On a playful drawing we see black and white icons: dancing people in the signature visual language of Corinde.
The artist moved to the Netherlands in 2016, became a father last year, in 2017, and now has his own family. He painted a door, symbolizing all the possibilities he gets – and uses – in the two countries with which he feels connected. Pakisei also means reflection, repentance and spiritual strength. His work reflects his inner growth, as a person and artist, but also shows that his roots are still in Suriname.
Isan Corinde (Brokopondo, 1990) graduated from the Nola Hatterman Art Academy in Paramaribo, Suriname, in 2012. Since then, his work can be seen at solo and group exhibitions. He collaborates with visual artists in Suriname and the Netherlands and shows his social involvement through projects with children and the elderly.
Corinde previously did two solo exhibitions at Sukru Oso gallery: in April 2015 the public enjoyed his solo adventure Avo Sondi, in June 2016 he was back with LOLO.
