Solo exhibition Dhiradj Ramsamoedj – Little Thank You

He takes inspiration from his well-known ‘flexible man’ sculptures, but chooses two different ways to present them, and in totally different dimensions. He connects the figures, literally and figuratively, and somewhat playfully, to the two ‘surfaces’ that he prefers to work on: books and canvasses

He uses books because of his fascination with their design and the knowledge that they hold within. Usually, he paints or draws in books that he selects with great care. But now he uses them as ‘pedestals’ for the figures that he constructs from tiny bits of scrap metal, an intricate and time-consuming process. These figures are not soft and flexible, but to the contrary, hard and strong. And books represent knowledge, and knowledge is strength. And Dhiradj adds to their narrative, his own story… and thus turns them into art: engaging visual art.

In the second series of artworks in Little Thank You Dhiradj Ramsamoedj transforms his canvasses into relief artworks in which the three-dimensional figures are literally and figuratively, pulling the strings. They are, although much smaller than the ‘flexible man’ sculptures, also made out of textile. From their positions against or on top of the canvas, it appears as though they are directing the imagery that is depicted within. But those familiar with the artist know that he is always fully in control, and always according to an utterly meticulous concept. In this collection, Dhiradj uses the concept of space, and of natural shapes and dimensions based on the principles of the Fibonacci Series and of the Golden Ratio. The creative processes leading to Dhiradj’s art are never simple and always well thought out. There is always much more to it than meets the eye! Because of this, and for many other reasons, this exhibition is a definite must see, and… Dhiradj Ramsamoedj an artist to keep a close eye on.

Op 6 juni opent in Readytex Art Gallery de nieuwe solo-expositie van Dhiradj Ramsamoedj. Dhiradj heeft met zijn interessante concepten, vanaf het begin van zijn carrière al – nu precies 15 jaar geleden – voor veel verrassingen en interessante kunstmomenten gezorgd. Voor deze 15 mooie jaren als zelfstandig beeldend kunstenaar is Dhiradj het kunstpubliek zeer erkentelijk. Hij geeft zijn expositie daarom, en ook omdat een van zijn kunstwerken zo heet, de titel: Little Thank You.

Hij put voor inspiratie uit zijn bekende ‘flexible man’ sculpturen, maar kiest nu voor twee andere presentaties, in totaal andere dimensies. Hij verbindt de nu kleinere figuren letterlijk en figuurlijk, en ook speels, aan de twee ‘ondergronden’ waar hij het liefst op werkt: boek en doek.

Boeken gebruikt hij vanwege zijn fascinatie met hun vormgeving en met de kennis die zij in zich dragen. Meestal schildert of schetst hij in boeken die hij altijd zorgvuldig uitkiest. Maar nu gebruikt hij ze als ‘sokkels’ voor de figuren die hij maakt uit minuscule stukjes afval-metaal, een boeiend en tijdrovend proces. Deze figuren zijn niet zacht en flexibel, maar juist hard en krachtig. En boeken vertegenwoordigen kennis, en kennis is kracht. Dhiradj voegt aan de verhalen zíjn verhaal toe en maakt ze tot kunst: sprekende beeldende kunst.

In de tweede serie kunstwerken in Little Thank You transformeert Dhiradj Ramsamoedj zijn canvassen tot reliëf werken waarin driedimensionale mensfiguren letterlijk en figuurlijk de touwtjes in handen hebben. Deze figuren zijn, hoewel veel kleiner, net als zijn ‘flexible man’ sculpturen vervaardigd uit textiel. Ze lijken vanuit hun positie tegen of bovenop het canvas, de regie in handen te hebben van het beeld dat zich erop afspeelt. Maar wie de kunstenaar kent, weet dat de regie volledig in zijn handen is, volgens zeer nauwkeurig concept. Dhiradj houdt hier rekening met ruimte, en met natuurlijke vormen en dimensies gebaseerd op de principes van de Fibonacci reeks en van de Gulden Snede. De ontstaansprocessen van het werk van Dhiradj zijn nooit simpel en altijd zeer goed doordacht. ‘There is always much more to it than meets the eye!’ Mede daarom is deze expositie zeker de moeite waard. En Dhiradj een kunstenaar om goed in de gaten te houden.
