De hele maand september en nog enkele weken daarna is er een bijzondere expositie te zien in de galerie CBK Zuidoost. Mental! gaat over de verschillende niveaus en vormen van mental slavery. Over het algemeen vinden deze hun oorsprong in het westers kolonialisme en de slavernij die daar onderdeel van is. Deze systemen vormen onder meer de basis voor de manier waarop onze economie georganiseerd is, hoe maatschappelijke klassen zich tot elkaar verhouden, hoe we omgaan met sekseverschillen en gender, heersende schoonheidsidealen en zij zijn de geboortekamer van de huidige concepten van ras en racisme. Hoe verhouden het belang van zwarte of niet-witte kunstenaars en hun onderwerpen zich tot het racisme, exotisme en ‘tokenisme’ in de veelal witte kunstwereld en haar discours?
During the entire month of September and for several weeks thereafter, there will be a special exhibition on view at the gallery CBK Zuidoost. Mental! deals with the various levels and forms of mental slavery. These generally have their origin in the Westerns colonialism and the slavery that is part thereof. Among other things, these systems form the basis for the way in which our economy is organized, how social classes relate to one another, how we deal with differences in sex and with gender, prevailing beauty ideals, and they are the birthplace of the current concepts about race and racism. How do the interests of black or non-white artists and their designs relate to racism, exoticism and ‘tokenism’ in the mostly white art world and its discourse?
