When: Opening night (with an introduction by Ellen de Vries): Thursday, March 05, 2020, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. The exhibition can be visited during the regular opening hours from March 06 until March 28. Opening hours: Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The exhibition is also open in the evenings of Friday February 6th and Saturday February 7th, from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

‘No art without artistry’ – 40 reproductions of Nola Hatterman’s most beautiful works
In March Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) will present a very special museological exhibition that will feature the work of artist Nola Hatterman (1899-1984). This exhibition that was made possible thanks to support from the embassy of the Netherlands in Paramaribo, has two curators: Ellen de Vries and Rinaldo Klas. Ellen de Vries is a researcher and publicist who wrote a book about the artist and Rinaldo Klas is a visual artist and former student of Nola Hatterman. Nola is best known as the art teacher for whom the Nola Hatterman Art Academy in Paramaribo is named, but only few are truly familiar with the art works that she herself made. In the exhibition Geen kunst zonder kunnen – 40 repro’s van Nola Hattermans mooiste werken [No art without artistry – 40 reproductions of Nola Hatterman’s most beautiful works], you will get acquainted with an important part of the oeuvre of this Dutch artist who made Suriname her home.
Nola was born in Amsterdam, in a colonial environment with ties to both the East and the West. As a child she was already puzzled by the discrimination directed towards people from the colonies. She thought they were beautiful. She became friends with the Surinamese art models who were much sought after in the 1930’s. She supported Surinamese in Amsterdam in their fight against discrimination and endorsed their plea for an independent Suriname. Their quest for revaluation of their own – repressed – culture fitted in seamlessly with Nola’s propaganda for a black instead of white beauty ideal. In 1953 she left for Suriname.
At the School voor Beeldende Kunst in Paramaribo, she taught the core principles of art to countless artists. At the end of her life she moved to the center of Brokopondo to complete her unique series about the history of slavery and marronage. This had been her intention ever since reading the book Wij slaven van Suriname [We slaves form Suriname] by Anton de Kom. In 1984 Nola passed away in a tragic accident on her way to Paramaribo, where she was about to participate in a group exhibition.

Nola werd geboren in Amsterdam, in een koloniaal milieu met banden met zowel De Oost als De West. Als kind verwonderde zij zich al over de discriminatie die inwoners uit de koloniën ten deel viel. Zíj vond ze prachtig. Ze sloot vriendschap met de Surinaamse schildersmodellen die in de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw zeer gewild waren. Ze steunde Surinamers in Amsterdam in hun strijd tegen discriminatie en onderschreef hun pleidooi voor een onafhankelijk Suriname. Hun zoektocht naar herwaardering van de eigen – onderdrukte – cultuur sloot naadloos aan bij Nola’s propaganda voor een zwart in plaats van wit schoonheidsideaal. In 1953 vertrok ze naar Suriname.
Op de School voor Beeldende Kunst in Paramaribo, bracht ze talloze kunstenaars de eerste beginselen bij. Op het eind van haar leven verhuisde ze naar Brokopondo-Centrum om daar haar unieke serie over de geschiedenis van slavernij en marronage te voltooien. Dit had ze zich ooit voorgenomen na het lezen van het boek Wij slaven van Suriname van Anton de Kom. In 1984 kwam Nola door een noodlottig ongeval om het leven op weg naar Paramaribo, waar ze zou deelnemen aan een groepsexpositie.
Vanaf donderdag 5 maart kunt u in Readytex Art Gallery 40 reproducties van Nola Hattermans mooiste werken bezichtigen. Vanwege het museale karakter van de tentoonstelling, zijn deze reproducties niet te koop. De expositie toont tevens originele kunstwerken van bekende Surinaamse kunstenaars die leerlingen zijn geweest van Nola.
Wij hopen u te mogen verwelkomen op deze speciale expositie, die een belangrijk hoofdstuk uit de Surinaamse kunstgeschiedenis belicht. Geen kunst zonder kunnen – 40 repro’s van Nola Hattermans mooiste werken opent op donderdag 5 maart om 19:30 uur. De expositie is verder te bezoeken van vrijdag 6 maart tot en met zaterdag 28 maart, van maandag t/m vrijdag van 08:00-16:30 uur en op de zaterdag van 08:30-13:30 uur. Met extra openingsavonden op vrijdag 6 en zaterdag 7 maart van 19:00-21:00 uur, met op die zaterdag om 19:30 uur een presentatie van oud-leerlingen Jules Brand-Flu en Rinaldo Klas.
