“The people in the portraits all have their own stories about the history of slavery and how this still affects their personal life” – artist and author Maartje Jaquet
Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) hosts the book presentation ALA SMA TORI – Keti Koti Verbeeld by the Amsterdam artist Maartje Jaquet on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Jaquet has worked on her art project about Ketikoti (Abolition of slavery) for three years, ultimately turning it into this beautiful book with portraits in pen and watercolor, interviews and more.
In 2019 Maartje Jaquet exhibited in Readytex Art Gallery with artist and good friend Rinaldo Klas in the duo-exhibition Bezielde Lijnen [Inspired Lines]. For that exhibition, she also made new work, consisting of drawn and painted portraits of people by the water side, known as the ‘Waterkant’. Back in Amsterdam, she expanded on this and made portraits of people who were celebrating Ketikoti on July 1, 2020. She also asked them questions about their experience of Ketikoti and this grew into a multi-disciplinary art project with among other things, stories, odo (Surinamese proverbs) and songs of the people. She subsequently wrote the book ALA SMA TORI – Keti Koti Verbeeld.
“With this book, I hope to help raise awareness about an underexposed part of Dutch history and the suffering that has been inflicted on so many people, the effects of which can still be felt. And that by recognizing this, we will be able to heal on both sides.” – artist and author Maartje Jaquet
Jaquet is not just looking forward to see her friends and colleagues at Readytex Art Gallery and other art institutions in Suriname, she is also curious how the people in Suriname will react to her work and wants to hear how they feel about the Ketikoti experience in Suriname, past and present.

“Elk van de geportretteerde mensen heeft een eigen verhaal over het slavernijverleden en hoe dit nog doorwerkt in hun persoonlijke leven” – kunstenares en auteur Maartje Jaquet
Op zaterdag 20 januari 2024 is er bij Readytex Art Gallery (RAG), de boekpresentatie ALA SMA TORI – Keti Koti Verbeeld van de Amsterdamse kunstenares Maartje Jaquet. Drie jaar lang werkte Jaquet aan haar kunstproject over Ketikoti en maakte hiervan dit prachtige boek met portretten in pen en aquarel, interviews en meer.
In 2019 exposeerde Jaquet in Readytex Art Gallery met kunstenaar en goede vriend Rinaldo Klas in de duo-expositie Bezielde Lijnen. Speciaal voor deze expositie maakte zij ook nieuw werk, getekende en geschilderde portretten van mensen aan de Waterkant. Weer terug in Amsterdam borduurde ze hierop voort en maakte ze portretten van mensen die op 1 juli 2020 Ketikoti vierden. Ze stelde hen ook vragen over hun beleving van Ketikoti en dit groeide uit tot een multidisciplinair kunstproject met onder meer verhalen, odo (Surinaamse gezegden) en liederen van de mensen. Naar aanleiding hiervan schreef zij het boek ALA SMA TORI – Keti Koti Verbeeld.
“Ik hoop dat ik met het project een steentje kan bijdragen aan de bewustwording van een onderbelicht deel van de Nederlandse geschiedenis en aan de erkenning van het leed dat heel veel mensen is aangedaan dat tot in het heden doorwerkt. Jaquet kijkt niet alleen halsreikend uit naar haar vrienden en collega’s van Readytex Art Gallery en andere kunstinstellingen in Suriname, zij is ook benieuwd hoe de mensen hier op haar werk zullen reageren en naar de beleving van Ketikoti in Suriname, vroeger en nu.
