PROJECT 35 is an initiative of Independent Curators International (ICI), in New York. It is a program of videos selected by 35 international curators who each chose one work from an artist they think is important for audiences around the world to experience today.

PROJECT 35 Volume 2 is the second edition of this program from ICI, offering a new selection of 35 artists from 6 continents, touring through December 2014. In this edition ICI once again draws from its extensive network of curators to trace the complexity of regional and global connections among practitioners and the variety of approaches used to make video. Since September 2012, the project has already traveled to such diverse locations as Ethiopia,  Michigan, Indonesia, Virginia, China, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Jamaica, and this is the first time that Project 35 Volume 2 will be presented in Suriname.

PROJECT 35 Volume 2 was recommended to Readytex Art Gallery by artist and curator Christopher Cozier from Trinidad & Tobago, who recognizes the value of collaborating and communicating within the extensive network of ICI. Cozier is also one of the 35 curators who selected one of the videos for this project and he was also involved with the presentation of PROJECT 35 Volume 2, at Alice Yard, an artist platform in Trinidad.

During the opening night exhibition of the video-installation at Readytex Art Gallery on December 18th, a selection of 9 films from the 35 will be on display, including the selection by Christopher Cozier. These video works, also shown on the first presentation at Alice Yard, are as stated:  ”(…) by artists ranging from Turkey to the Bahamas, from Egypt to Brazil, from China to Norway, and they reflect on the intersections of routine and ritual, the mundane and the absurd, the possibility or impossibility of intelligible communication.”

After the opening night presentation PROJECT 35 Volume 2 will continue to be on display at Readytex Art Gallery from the 19th until the 24th of December, during the regular opening hours of the gallery. These are: Monday-Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.

On this occasion Readytex Art Gallery also welcomes Mr. Willem Elias, art philosopher, professor and publicist from Belgium, who will give a lecture on modern art at 8:00 pm, titled WANNEER KUNST EN WAARVOOR? [WHEN ART AND WHAT FOR?].The lecture will be applied to several Belgian artists and two from Suriname: Kurt Nahar and Marcel Pinas, and is based on the reprint of his booklet Moderne Kunst  which will also be available for purchase on this night.

Project 35 Volume 2 is a traveling exhibition produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York. The exhibition is made possible, in part, by grants from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, and the Robert Lehman Foundation; the ICI Board of Trustees; and donors to ICI’s Access Fund.

Independent Curators International (ICI) connects emerging and established curators, artists, and institutions to forge international networks and generate new forms of collaboration through the production of exhibitions, events, publications, and curatorial training. Headquartered in New York, the organization provides public access to the people and practices that are key to current developments in curating and exhibition-making around the world, inspiring fresh ways of seeing and contextualizing contemporary art. Since it was established in 1975, ICI has worked with over 1,000 curators and 3,700 artists from 47 countries worldwide.
