The next Thursday-Night-Feature (TNF) is right around the corner. On Thursday the 7th of February, Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) welcomes as their guest Dutch artist Roosje Verschoor who will give a presentation titled De geschiedenis op je schouders: een verhaal over teloorgang en veerkracht in Moengo [History on your shoulders: a story about demise and resilience in Moengo]. Her presentation will be centered around the photo workshop that she gave to youngsters in Moengo from November 2018 until January 2019.
As an artist Roosje Verschoor uses photography and video as her media. With her images, she tries to show the layers of traditions, stories, situations and locations. As such she is fascinated by the interesting history, the people and the contrasts of the city of Moengo. And as stated in her title of her presentation, by the story about demise and resilience in Moengo. This is not the first project that Roosje is involved with in the former bauxite town. In a previous photo project the old golf course was part of her theme. In her current project ‘Double Heritage’ she puts the camera in the hands of youngsters from the area. She teaches them basic photography skills and asks them to capture on film, things that are important to them, or things that are typical to Moengo. Things from either the past or present-day. Sometimes Roosje gives assignments and sometimes she allows them to choose their own subjects. She also takes the youngsters to the deserted staff village of the bauxite company Suralco, and gives them – in that place where they have never before been – the opportunity to take pictures of the things that stand out to them. The results of the project will be shown at a presentation in Moengo on February 9th, 2019, and a little later also in a photo book.

De volgende Thursday-Night-Feature (TNF) staat voor de deur. Op donderdag 7 februari heeft Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) de Nederlandse kunstenaar Roosje Verschoor te gast voor haar presentatie: De geschiedenis op je schouders: een verhaal over teloorgang en veerkracht in Moengo. Centraal in haar presentatie staat de fotoworkshop die zij van november 2018 tot en met januari 2019 gaf aan een groep jongeren in Moengo.
Als kunstenaar gebruikt Roosje Verschoor fotografie en video als medium. Met haar beelden probeert zij de lagen van tradities, verhalen, situaties en locaties weer te geven. In dat kader is zij bijzonder geboeid door de interessante geschiedenis, de mensen en de contrasten van het stadje Moengo. En zoals de titel van haar presentatie al zegt, door het verhaal over teloorgang en veerkracht van Moengo. Dit is dan ook niet het eerste project van Roosje in dit voormalige bauxietstadje. In een eerder fotoproject speelde het vroegere golfterrein een rol in haar thema. In haar huidige project ‘Double Heritage’ plaatst zij het fototoestel in de handen van jongeren uit het gebied zelf. Ze brengt hen de basisvaardigheden van het fotograferen bij en vraagt hen dingen vast te leggen die voor hen belangrijk zijn, of typisch zijn voor het stadje Moengo. Dingen van toen en dingen van nu. Soms zijn er opdrachten aan verbonden en soms zijn de participanten vrij om zelf hun onderwerp te kiezen. Ze brengt met de groep bijvoorbeeld een bezoek aan het verlaten stafdorp van de bauxietmaatschappij Suralco en geeft hen de gelegenheid ook daar, op die plek waar ze nooit eerder geweest zijn, foto’s te maken van de dingen die hen opvallen. De resultaten van het project zullen op 9 februari te zien zijn in een presentatie in Moengo en iets later ook in een fotoboek.
Op de TNF van donderdag 7 februari zal Roosje Verschoor vertellen over haar ervaring met de jongeren en het project in Moengo en laat zij ook een deel van de foto’s zien die zij gemaakt hebben. De presentatie begint om 19:30 uur.
