The first large solo exhibition in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) for 2020 is the exhibition of visual artist Paul Chang named Transformation. The last time this artist – who has been living in Florida in the US, for many years – exhibited in Suriname, was in 2013. Now, almost seven years later, Paul Chang is once again eager to share his latest works with the art loving public in his country of birth, Suriname. And as the title of the exhibition clearly suggests, his art has indeed undergone a transformation.
To those familiar with the work of Paul Chang, the transformation is certainly visible. But the artist himself has also gone through a bit of a transformation. In his recent works Paul Chang detaches himself from the acquirements of the academy and chooses an imagery that is much more abstract. He gives in to a liberating process of change that influences his compositions, his use of form and his colors. “Since the figurative was of no importance here, it gave me the freedom to depict my inspiration in a more natural and intuitive manner”, says the artist.
That freedom is almost palpable in the work. Cheerful colors and organic shapes come to life on the canvas, in seemingly random compositions. Still, the artist’s characteristic signature remains recognizable. And the transformation has no influence on the effect that his work has always had on the viewer. Because regardless of your mood or mindset, the art works of Paul Chang still have the undeniable capacity to instill a small moment of cheer, of peace and positive thoughts. That is not really strange, because just like before nature is still the most important source of inspiration to the artist. And some of the freer and more abstract objects in his visual imagery – in some works more than in others – do still closely resemble elements from nature. “Because I consistently use organic shapes, there is a certain relationship with shapes found in nature”, explains the artist. The result is an exhibition containing a beautiful collection of giclée prints on canvas, each individually enhanced with acrylic paint.

De eerste grote solo-expositie in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) voor het jaar 2020 is de expositie Transformation van de beeldend kunstenaar Paul Chang. De kunstenaar, die al jarenlang in Florida in de Verenigde Staten woont, exposeerde voor het laatst in 2013 in Suriname. Nu, bijna zeven jaar later, laat Paul Chang het kunstminnend publiek in zijn geboorteland graag zijn nieuwste kunstwerken zien. Kunstwerken die in de afgelopen periode, zoals de titel dat al aangeeft, een zekere transformatie hebben ondergaan.
Voor hen die het werk van Paul Chang goed kennen, is de transformatie zeker zichtbaar. Maar ook de kunstenaar zelf heeft hiervoor in zekere mate een transformatie ondergaan. In zijn recente werken laat Paul Chang namelijk de verworvenheden van de academie los en kiest hij een beeldtaal die meer naar het abstracte neigt. Hij geeft toe aan een bevrijdend veranderingsproces dat invloed heeft op zijn composities, zijn vormgeving en zijn kleuren. “Omdat het figuratieve hier niet van belang was, gaf het mij meer vrijheid om zo ongedwongen mogelijk mijn inspiratie weer te geven,” aldus de kunstenaar. Die vrijheid is in het werk bijna tastbaar. Opgewekte kleuren en organische vormen vinden in schijnbaar willekeurige composities hun plek op het doek. Het typische handschrift van de kunstenaar blijft echter wel herkenbaar. En ook heeft de transformatie geen invloed op het effect dat zijn werk altijd heeft op de kijker. Want ongeacht uw stemming of gemoedstoestand, hebben de kunstwerken van Paul Chang nog steeds het onmiskenbare vermogen om, een klein moment van blijdschap, rust en positieve gedachten op te wekken. Dat is ook niet zo vreemd, want net als voorheen is de natuur nog steeds de belangrijkste bron van inspiratie voor de kunstenaar. En ondanks zijn vrijere en abstractere beeldtaal is dat – in sommige werken meer dan in andere – toch wel terug te vinden. Zelf zegt Paul Chang daarover: “Omdat ik steeds weer organische vormen gebruik, is er in zekere zin een verwantschap met vormen in de natuur.” Het resultaat is een expositie met een prachtige collectie giclee prints, die elk individueel met acryl bewerkt zijn.
