In Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) the first major solo exhibition for this year will be LA VIE – A LIBI. For longer than a year now, renowned visual artist John Lie A Fo has been working diligently on the works of art that he will present in his exhibition called LA VIE – A LIBI starting on March 12th. His labors have resulted in a fascinating and diverse collection consisting of paintings, mixed media artworks, assemblages and sculptures.
Given in part because of the many months that John Lie A Fo was able to work on his new collection, and all that was going on around him and in the world, the themes of his artworks are very diverse. He simply kept drawing from what is to him, the infinite and limitless source of inspiration of life and his imagination. It is therefore, that the exhibition of this highly skilled and experienced artist who considers both Suriname and French Guiana home, is appropriately titled: LA VIE – A LIBI. He consistently manages to portray the rich stories and imagination that play out in his head, onto the surfaces that he chooses in a rather striking way, and in his typical and unique signature style. His powerful imagery is characterized as always, by an exuberant and vibrant form of expression and a deliberate, often playful deformation of the figures that he portrays.
For John Lie A Fo, his fascinating youth in multi-cultural Suriname, the many years spent studying and working in Europe, his settling in French Guiana and the successful career that he has built from there, have always been a rich breeding ground. He creates art about the things that appeal to him and the things that give him pleasure, but also about historical or social subjects in his personal environment and abroad. His new collection touches on multiple subjects, including: the worldwide Corona-pandemic, fragments of rituals, traditions and stories from the many cultures that he is familiar with and also personally identifies with, colonial history and elements from the rich tropical flora and fauna that he so admires. And with that, his exhibition also fits perfectly within the project ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time that is being implemented at Readytex Art Gallery for a yearlong together with curator-in-residence Miguel E. Keerveld. Within the framework of this project, colleague artist Sri Irodikromo has been assigned as lead-curator for the exhibition LA VIE – A LIBI.

Bij Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) is de eerste grote solo-expositie voor dit jaar LA VIE – A LIBI. Beeldend kunstenaar John Lie A Fo, aan wie de eer deze keer toekomt, is al langer dan een jaar druk bezig met het creëren van de kunstwerken die hij vanaf 12 maart presenteert in zijn expositie genaamd LA VIE – A LIBI. Het resultaat is een boeiende en diverse collectie die bestaat uit schilderijen, mixed media werkstukken, assemblages en sculpturen.
Mede vanwege de vele maanden die John Lie A Fo aan zijn nieuwe collectie kon besteden, en al hetgeen zich gedurende die tijd om hem afspeelde, is ook de thematiek van de werken zeer divers. Hij putte namelijk voortdurend uit de voor hem oneindige en onbegrensde inspiratiebron van het leven en zijn verbeelding. Daarom kreeg de expositie van deze zeer bekwame en ervaren kunstenaar die zich in Suriname zowel als in Frans-Guyana thuis voelt, dan ook de toepasselijke titel: LA VIE – A LIBI. De rijke verhalen en verbeelding die zich in zijn hoofd afspelen, worden door hem zeer treffend, en in zijn typische en geheel eigen handschrift, weergeven op de dragers die hij kiest. Zijn krachtige beeldtaal kenmerkt zich ook hier weer door een uitbundige en bontgekleurde vorm van expressie en een bewuste, vaak speels ogende deformatie van de figuren die hij uitbeeldt.
Voor John Lie A Fo zijn zijn boeiende jeugd in multicultureel Suriname, de vele jaren die hij in Europa voor studie en werk doorbracht, zijn vestiging in Frans-Guyana en de succesvolle kunstcarrière die hij vandaaruit opbouwde, altijd een rijke voedingsbodem geweest. Hij maakt kunst over dingen die hem aanspreken en dingen die hem plezier doen, maar ook over historische en sociaal-maatschappelijke onderwerpen die hem aangrijpen in zijn persoonlijke omgeving en in de wereld daarbuiten. Zo komen in zijn nieuwe kunstcollectie verschillende onderwerpen aan bod, waaronder: de wereldwijde Corona-pandemie, fragmenten van rituelen, tradities en verhalen van de vele culturen waarmee hij bekend is en zich ook mee identificeert, de koloniale geschiedenis en elementen uit de rijke tropische flora en fauna. Daarmee past zijn expositie ook heel goed in het project ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time dat Readytex Art Gallery een jaarlang uitvoert samen met curator-in-residence Miguel E. Keerveld. In het kader van dit project is collega-kunstenaar Sri Irodikromo aangewezen als ‘lead-curator’ voor de expositie LA VIE – A LIBI.
