What: ALAKONDRE TORI, an exhibition by Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi

Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) proudly presents yet another special art exhibition. ALAKONDRE TORI, the solo exhibition of visual artist and writer Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, has opened on the ground floor of the gallery on November 3, 2022. The exhibition follows the recent presentation of her new book Het Alakondre Drakenmeisje (The Alakondre Dragon Girl), in Readytex Art Gallery on October 1, 2022. With her exhibition ALAKONDRE TORI, she now offers the public the opportunity to view and enjoy the beautiful artworks that appear in her book, in person.
The text and paintings in Kit-Ling’s book tell the story of the extraordinary life of Darey Ann who lives in Suriname, but ends up in the Netherlands and China for some time during her adolescence. In the story it becomes evident that Darey Ann, who has a hybrid personality just like the artist, possesses tremendous resilience, because she is Alakondre. The idea to write a book about Darey Ann who is in search of her identity, originated about fifteen years ago. The writing process was accelerated in recent years, mainly because of the inspiring krutu taking place within the current ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time project at Readytex Art Gallery. This again resulted in the creation of the corresponding artworks. The exhibition ALAKONDRE TORI is an integral part of this larger project at the gallery, and fits in seamlessly with the fascinating dialogues that are held within that context. In addition to the artworks from the book, the exhibition includes more works of art by Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi that also tell an Alakondre tori.
The book and the exhibition include an educational program. Thanks to various sponsors, Kit-Ling was able to present a copy of the book to secondary schools. The students are invited to visit the exhibition ALAKONDRE TORI and will participate in an interactive program, including reading sessions. They will thus experience the connection between the stories and the artworks, and engage in conversations with the artist. On Saturdays, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, other visitors to the exhibition will be able to enjoy a similar program. In the second quarter of the school year 2022 – 2023, there is also a drawing/painting and writing competition planned, which is inspired by Kit-Ling’s book Het Alakondre Drakenmeisje.
Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) heeft weer een bijzondere expositie op het programma. Op 3 november 2022 opende op de begane grond van de galerie namelijk ALAKONDRE TORI, de solo-expositie van beeldend kunstenares en schrijfster Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi. Op 1 oktober 2022 had zij in Readytex Art Gallery, onder grote publieke belangstelling, al de presentatie van haar nieuwste boek Het Alakondre Drakenmeisje. De prachtige kunstwerken die in dit boek voorkomen, worden nu in de expositie ALAKONDRE TORI fysiek aan het publiek gepresenteerd.
In het boek van Kit-Ling vertellen tekst en beeld over het wonderbaarlijke leven van Darey Ann die in Suriname woont, maar als adolescent voor enige tijd eerst in Nederland en dan in China terechtkomt. Uit het verhaal blijkt duidelijk dat Darey Ann, die net als de schrijfster een hybride persoonlijkheid heeft, een enorme veerkracht bezit omdat ze Alakondre is. Het idee om een boek te schrijven over Darey Ann die op zoek is naar haar identiteit ontstond reeds vijftien jaar geleden. In de afgelopen jaren kwam het mede dankzij de inspirerende krutu binnen het huidige ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time project bij Readytex Art Gallery, in een versnelling terecht. Zo ook het ontstaan van de bijbehorende kunstwerken. De expositie ALAKONDRE TORI is een integraal deel van dit groter project bij de galerie en sluit naadloos aan op de boeiende dialogen die daarbinnen gevoerd worden. Behalve de kunstwerken uit het boek, zijn er in de expositie nog meer werken van Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi te zien die een Alakondre tori vertellen.
Bij het boek en de expositie hoort er ook een educatief programma. Dankzij verschillende sponsors heeft Kit-Ling aan voj- en vos-scholen een exemplaar van het boek kunnen schenken. De leerlingen zijn uitgenodigd om de expositie ALAKONDRE TORI te bezoeken en nemen deel aan een interactief programma inclusief voorleessessies. Ze ervaren dan de verbinding tussen de verhalen en de kunstwerken en gaan in gesprek met de kunstenares. Op de zaterdagen is er tussen 10:00 en 12:00 uur voor overige bezoekers van de expositie een soortgelijk programma beschikbaar. In het tweede kwartaal van het schooljaar 2022-2023 komt er, geïnspireerd door Kit-Ling’s boek Het Alakondre Drakenmeisje, ook nog een teken-/schilder- en schrijfprijsvraag voor scholieren.
