The exhibition ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, I am’, was held in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG), June 2023, in commemoration of 150 years of Hindustani Immigration. ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, I am’ depicts events and elements that have (had) an influence on the identity formation of Hindustanis, from the moment of their arrival in Suriname in 1873 to the present day.
With works by Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Kurt Nahar, Sri Irodikromo, Kenneth Flijders, Shaundell Horton, Sunil Puljhun, Hanka Wolterstorff, Miguel Keerveld, Leonnie van Eert, Rinaldo Klas, René Tosari, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie and Wilgo Vijfhoven, curator Aruna Mungra portrays these events and elements, such as the arrival of the indentured laborers and their uncertainty and fear on their way to the unknown whilst hoping for a new and better life; the hard work on the plantations, where sugar cane was the main crop; family, traditions and religion. But also more current issues, such as the position of women, alcoholism and discrimination.
The eye-catching works Alakondre Blue and Shaman Ecology by Miguel Keerveld, in which time, space and diversity play an important role, refer to the dynamic and multidimensional character of identity: the individual and collective aspect, and time and place, as these four elements are interrelated and influence each other. As a Hindustani in Suriname, your identity is substantially formed by your roots in India and the 150 years of shared history and shared view of the future with all other Surinamese, who often also have their roots elsewhere in the world: ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, I am’.
De expositie ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, ik ben’, gehouden in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG), in juni 2023, is ter herdenking van 150 jaar Hindostaanse Immigratie. ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, ik ben’ verbeeldt gebeurtenissen en elementen die invloed hebben (gehad) op de identiteitsvorming van Hindostanen vanaf hun komst in 1873 in Suriname tot op heden.
Met werken van Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Kurt Nahar, Sri Irodikromo, Kenneth Flijders, Shaundell Horton, Sunil Puljhun, Hanka Wolterstorff, Miguel Keerveld, Leonnie van Eert, Rinaldo Klas, René Tosari, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie en Wilgo Vijfhoven brengt curator Aruna Mungra deze gebeurtenissen en elementen in beeld, zoals de komst van de contractarbeiders en hun onzekerheid en angst op weg naar het onbekende in de hoop op een nieuw en beter leven; het harde werk op de plantages, waar met name suikerriet werd verbouwd; familie, tradities en geloof. Maar ook hedendaagse problemen, zoals de positie van de vrouw, alcoholisme en discriminatie.
Met de in het oog springende werken Alakondre Blue en Shaman Ecology van Miguel Keerveld, waarbij tijd, ruimte en diversiteit een belangrijke rol spelen, wordt verwezen naar het dynamische en multidimensionale karakter van identiteit: het individuele en collectieve aspect, en tijd en plaats, al deze vier elementen zijn met elkaar verbonden en beïnvloeden elkaar. Als Hindostaan in Suriname wordt je identiteit substantieel gevormd door je roots in India en de 150 jaar lang opgebouwde gezamenlijke geschiedenis en gedeelde blik op de toekomst met alle andere Surinamers, die vaak ook hun wortels elders in de wereld hebben liggen: ‘Sarnami, Hai; Suriname, ik ben’.
