Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) and visual artist Kurt Nahar are happy to invite you to his new solo exhibition titled That which I have found, becomes mine. An appropriate title, because Kurt makes all that he encounters, finds or discovers; anything that even slightly impresses him or catches his attention, his own. Nothing is off-limits when it comes to the art of Kurt Nahar. And while the visual language in his new artworks is diverse, provocative and often challenging, it is above all a reflection of his exploration and discovery of life, society and his own identity. The curator of the exhibition is Rosie Gordon-Wallace, the director of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI) in Miami, USA, who has been collaborating with Readytex Art Gallery for many years.
Kurt Nahar’s greatest source of inspiration is life itself. And as such, the continuous influx of objects, impressions and impulses that invariably and indiscriminately trigger his ever curious and creative brain are all fair game. Observations or conversations from his day-to-day activities, deeper explorations into his own heritage, his enriching art-related travels abroad, as well as significant social or political events, all serve to inform the narratives in his visual imagery. The title of this exhibition for example, was inspired by a lady on the bus, wearing a traditional cloth folded diagonally in a triangle and tied around her waist, with this text embroidered in the Saramaccan Maroon language, on display on her derriere. And thus, in that moment, that which Kurt had found, became his. The text, that is.
Particularly noticeable in the collection of artworks in That which I have found, becomes mine, are the many canvases in which texts play a central role. Kurt’s fascination for language, wordplay and numbers, is largely fed by Surinamese and Jamaican street culture and music, his multicultural heritage research, and numerology. He uses these in bold compositions and combinations to give expression to his active imagination and deep social engagement, often creating striking artworks that reference sexuality, identity and social injustice. He applies the same energy and concepts towards his other artistic expressions, which include mixed media collages, assemblages, and installations.
Kurt Nahar invites you and all visitors to engage and explore without reservations, and to thus make your own observations and discoveries. And perhaps you too, shall make that which you find, your own.
That which I have found, becomes mine opens in Readytex Art Gallery on Thursday August 10 at 07:30 pm. After this, the exhibition can be visited from Friday, August 11 until Saturday September 2, during the regular opening hours of the gallery from Monday-Friday from 08:00 am-04:30 pm and on Saturday from 08:30 am-01:30 pm.

Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) en beeldend kunstenaar Kurt Nahar nodigen u met genoegen uit voor zijn nieuwe solo-expositie, getiteld That which I have found, becomes mine. Een toepasselijke titel, want wat Kurt ook tegenkomt, vindt of ontdekt, alles dat ook maar enigszins indruk maakt of opvalt, maakt hij zich eigen. Niets is ‘off-limits’ als het op de kunst van Kurt Nahar aankomt. En terwijl de beeldtaal in zijn nieuwe kunstwerken daardoor veelzijdig, prikkelend en vaak uitdagend is, is het vooral een reflectie van zijn verkennings- en ontdekkingsreis naar het leven, de maatschappij en zijn eigen identiteit. De curator van deze expositie is Rosie Gordon-Wallace, de directeur van Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI) in Miami, USA, die al jarenlang een belangrijke samenwerkingspartner is van Readytex Art Gallery.
De grootste inspiratiebron van Kurt Nahar is het leven zelf. Als zodanig is de voortdurende toestroom van objecten, indrukken en impulsen die steevast en ongefilterd op zijn nieuwsgierige en creatieve brein inwerken, een rijke voedingsbodem. Bewuste of willekeurige observaties en gesprekken uit zijn dagelijkse leven, de diepere speurtocht naar zijn eigen erfgoed, de vele verrijkende kunstgerelateerde reizen naar het buitenland, maar ook markante maatschappelijke en politieke gebeurtenissen, zijn allemaal van invloed op zijn kunstwerken. De titel van deze tentoonstelling is bijvoorbeeld geïnspireerd op een ontmoeting met een dame in de bus, die om haar heupen een traditionele doek had gebonden. In het Saramaccaans was deze tekst geborduurd op het stuk dat hing over haar derrière. Op dat moment, ‘that which Kurt had found, became his’. De tekst, welteverstaan.
Vooral opvallend in de collectie kunstwerken in That which I have found, becomes mine, zijn de vele doeken waarin teksten een centrale rol spelen. Kurts fascinatie voor taal, woordspelingen en getallen, wordt grotendeels gevoed door de Surinaamse en Jamaicaanse straatcultuur en muziek, zijn multicultureel erfgoedonderzoek en de numerologie. Deze gebruikt hij in gedurfde composities en combinaties om uitdrukking te geven aan zijn levendige verbeelding en sterke sociale betrokkenheid. Hij creëert zo opvallende kunstwerken die vaak verwijzen naar seksualiteit, identiteit en sociaal onrecht. Dezelfde energie en concepten past hij toe op zijn andere kunstuitingen, waaronder mixed media collages, assemblages en installaties.
Kurt Nahar nodigt u en alle bezoekers uit om zich zonder reserveringen in zijn werk te verdiepen en zo tot uw eigen observaties en ontdekkingen te komen. Misschien zult u dat wat u vindt, ook tot het uwe maken.
That which I have found, becomes mine opent in Readytex Art Gallery op donderdag 10 augustus om 19:30 uur. Daarna is de expositie te bezoeken van vrijdag 11 augustus tot en met zaterdag 02 september, gedurende de reguliere openingstijden van de galerie van maandag t/m vrijdag van 08:00-16:30 uur en op zaterdag van 08:30-13:30 uur.
