Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) is proud to announce that works by several of her affiliated artists have been chosen by the curators to be presented in the 1st Bienal das Amazônias in Belém, the capital of Pará in Brazil.
Opening to the public on August 4 and on view until November 5, 2023, this first edition of the Biennial has as its theme: Bubuia: Water as a Source of Imaginations and Desires. This term, used by the Caboclos (Brazilians of mixed Indigenous, European and African descent), inspired the curators to think about the Amazonian wisdom of respecting the flow of the rivers and the life that is projected in the forest.
Created with the proposal to awaken reflection on how art is made in the region without stereotypes, the new art institution in the global South will bring together 121 artists/collectives from nine countries in the Pan-Amazon region. From Brazil, representatives of nine States will be present. Together the artists represent a region with common geographic characteristics of the biome formed by the forest, the fauna and the rivers, and shared ways of life associated with natural resources – maintaining their multiple territories, multiple ways of living and their own historical contexts. The participating Surinamese visual artists from Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) are Kenneth Flijders, Miguel Keerveld, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi and René Tosari. Also participating from Suriname is Marcel Pinas.
The Biennial will be held in what was formerly the largest department store of its time, consisting of four floors and 7.6 thousand square meters in the commercial center of the capital of Pará. The choice of space, different from the usual museums and galleries, and the focus on artists from the Amazon, is part of the strategy incorporated by the Bienal das Amazônias to break with the “usual” ways of making art, considering methods, aesthetics, materials, spaces and narratives.
The curatorial body of the Bienal das Amazônias is composed of a ‘Sapukai’ collective of women with diverse profiles including Sandra Benites, Keyna Eleison, Vânia Leal and Flavya Mutran. ‘Sapukai’, a term derived from the Tupi language can be translated as: chant, clamor, scream. At the Biennial the meaning approaches the curatorial intention of strengthening what is chant or scream, of pain, joy or fear of the Amazonian peoples expressed in the works of the artists.
The Bienal das Amazônias is open to the public free of charge at Rua Senador Manoel Barata, 400, Comércio – Belém, Pará, Amazônia, Brazil. Opening hours are from Tuesday to Friday, from 09:30 am to 07:00 pm; on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 08:00 pm, and on Sundays from 11:00 am to 06:00 pm.

Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) deelt met trots het nieuws dat kunstwerken van verschillende bij haar aangesloten kunstenaars zijn uitgekozen door de curators voor deelname aan de eerste Bienal das Amazônias in Belém, de hoofdstad van Pará in Brazilië.
Deze eerste editie van de Bienal das Amazônias, die geopend is voor het publiek vanaf 4 augustus tot en met 5 november 2023, heeft als thema: Bubuia: Water as a Source of Imaginations and Desires. Deze term die door de Caboclos (Brazilianen van gemengde Inheemse, Europese en Afrikaanse komaf) wordt gebruikt, inspireerde de curatoren om na te denken over de wijsheid die leeft in het Amazonegebied omtrent het respecteren van de stroom van de rivieren en het leven in het oerwoud.
Bedacht vanuit het concept om reflectie op gang te brengen over hoe kunst in de regio gemaakt wordt zonder stereotypen, zal dit nieuwe kunstgebeuren op het Zuidelijk halfrond 121 kunstenaars/collectieven uit negen landen in het Pan-Amazonegebied samenbrengen. Vanuit Brazilië zullen vertegenwoordigers van negen staten aanwezig zijn. Samen vertegenwoordigen de kunstenaars een regio met gemeenschappelijke geografische kenmerken van het bioom gevormd door het bos, de fauna en de rivieren, en overeenkomstige manieren van leven die geassocieerd zijn met natuurlijke hulpbronnen – met behoud van hun meerdere territoria, verschillende manieren van leven en hun eigen historische context. De deelnemende Surinaamse beeldend kunstenaars van Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) zijn Kenneth Flijders, Miguel Keerveld, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi en René Tosari. Ook vanuit Suriname neemt deel: Marcel Pinas.
De Bienal das Amazônias wordt gehouden in wat vroeger het grootste warenhuis van zijn tijd was, met vier verdiepingen en 7,6 duizend vierkante meter in het commerciële centrum van de hoofdstad Pará. De keuze van de ruimte, die anders is dan de gewoonlijke musea en galerijen en de focus op kunstenaars uit de Amazone, is deel van de strategie van de Biënnale om te breken met “gebruikelijke” manieren om kunst te maken, met betrekking tot methoden, esthetiek, materialen, ruimtes en verhalen.
Het curatorenteam van de Bienal das Amazônias bestaat uit een ‘Sapukai’-collectief van vrouwen met diverse profielen, waaronder Sandra Benites, Keyna Eleison, Vânia Leal en Flavya Mutran. ‘Sapukai’, een term afgeleid van de Tupi-taal, kan worden vertaald als: zang, rumoer, schreeuw. Op de Biënnale refereert de betekenis naar de intentie van de curators om meer kracht te geven aan het gezang of de schreeuw – zij het van pijn, vreugde of angst – van de Amazonevolkeren, zoals die tot uitdrukking worden gebracht in de werken van de kunstenaars.
De Bienal das Amazônias is gratis toegankelijk voor het publiek in de Rua Senador Manoel Barata, 400, Comércio – Belém, Pará, Amazônia, Brazilië. De openingstijden zijn van dinsdag tot en met vrijdag, van 09:30 tot 19:00 uur; op zaterdag van 11:00 tot 20:00 uur en op zondag van 11:00 tot 18:00 uur.
