The exhibition Muddy Waters is an artistic reflection on the Bienal das Amazônias that opened for the first time this year in Brazil and for which works by five artists represented by Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) were also selected by the organization. The significance of the water of the Amazon for local life is a central theme in the Biennale. In Muddy Waters, curators Aruna Mungra and Miguel Keerveld add to the discourse by focusing on the muddy waters that characterize our rivers.
We often find the mud dirty and ugly, but it provides fertility and life. The rivers stretch from south to north and form the lifelines of flora and fauna. But these waters are also indispensable for people in daily life and our economic activities, for example as sources of food and drinking water, as suppliers of fertile soil through the disposal of silt in the coastal plain, and as an important network of connecting waterways in our country.
A murky situation
In another sense muddy waters also stand symbolic for the murkiness of what is happening in our rainforest. Failing government policy allows people who put their own financial gain first to go ahead. Instead of sustainable development activities, illegal logging and gold mining are proliferating. The forest is destroyed without replanting and the discharge of toxic substances clogs the lifelines of our Amazon.
Sapukai
The Indigenous and Maroon communities living in the interior are raising their voices. But still they are not being heard. Just as the Bienal das Amazônias wanted to be a sapukai, a cry that comes from deep within, from the Amazon artists, this exhibition with works by Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Miguel Keerveld, Rinaldo Klas, Reinier Asmoredjo, Shaundell Horton, Hanka Wolterstorff, Leonnie van Eert, Kenneth Flijders, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie, John Lie A Fo, Sunil Puljhun, Sri Irodikromo, Wilgo Vijfhoven and René Tosari, is an outcry to protect our beautiful rainforest.

De expositie Muddy Waters is een artistieke reflectie op de Bienal das Amazônias die dit jaar voor het eerst opende in Brazilië en waarvoor ook werken van vijf kunstenaars van Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) door de organisatie werden geselecteerd. De betekenis van het water van de Amazone voor het leven aldaar is een centraal thema in deze Biënnale. In Muddy Waters geven de curatoren Aruna Mungra en Miguel Keerveld een Surinaamse draai hieraan door zich te richten op onze rivieren met de kenmerkende modderige wateren.
Vaak vinden we de modder vies en niet mooi, maar deze zorgt voor vruchtbaarheid en leven. De rivieren strekken zich uit van zuid naar noord en vormen de levensaders van flora en fauna. Maar ook voor mensen zijn deze wateren onmisbaar in het dagelijks bestaan en onze economische activiteiten, bijvoorbeeld als bronnen van voedsel en drinkwater, als leveranciers van vruchtbare grond door de afzet van slib in de kustvlakte, en als belangrijk netwerk van verbindingswegen in ons land.
In troebel water is het goed vissen!
In troebel water is het echter goed vissen en dat blijkt! Door falend overheidsbeleid kunnen mensen die eigen financieel gewin vooropstellen hun gang gaan. In plaats van duurzame ontwikkelingsactiviteiten, woekeren de illegale houtkap en goudwinning. Het woud wordt vernield zonder herplanting en de lozing van giftige stoffen laat de levensaders van onze Amazone dichtslibben.
Sapukai
De Inheemse en Marron gemeenschappen die in het binnenland wonen, verheffen hun stem steeds luider. Maar ze worden niet gehoord. Zoals de Bienal das Amazônias een sapukai, een schreeuw die diep van binnen komt, wilde zijn van de Amazone kunstenaars, is deze expositie met werken van Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Miguel Keerveld, Rinaldo Klas, Reinier Asmoredjo, Shaundell Horton, Hanka Wolterstorff, Leonnie van Eert, Kenneth Flijders, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie, John Lie A Fo, Sunil Puljhun, Sri Irodikromo, Wilgo Vijfhoven en René Tosari, een noodkreet voor de bescherming van ons prachtige regenwoud.
