Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) currently features a special new group exhibition in light of this year’s 170th commemoration of Chinese Immigration to Suriname. For the exhibition Hakka Opera in Suriname, curators Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi and Rinaldo Klas took their inspiration from the way in which the Hakka people who have migrated all over the world have been able to adapt, and also from the engaging storylines in their lively and colorful operas.
“The Hakka Opera is a story. As curator I see myself as a storyteller who creates the story of an opera by putting together this exhibition. The exhibition as a whole is the opera and the artists are the actors,” explains visual artist and curator Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi who chose the title of the exhibition. Co-curator artist Rinaldo Klas has had the privilege of actually witnessing several traditional opera performances in China and remembers well how they drew him in. “Even though I don’t speak the language, I could grasp the story of the opera through the movements, costumes and expressive mimicry of the artists.”
The Hakka Opera is something that still lives and is considered important in Hakka culture. And just like the Hakka people who have historically migrated within China and to many other countries all over the world, where they subsequently adapted to their new locations and environments with an ease that seems to come naturally, the Hakka Opera has adapted as well and can thus be quite different depending on where you are. As such, the story told within the exhibition Hakka Opera in Suriname, presents its own unique dialogue that is reflective of Suriname, a country in which so many different cultures, including the Hakka, have adapted to become part of one fascinating interwoven tapestry that is visible in daily life as well as in art. In addition to the chosen artworks from the various artists affiliated with Readytex Art Gallery and special art installations by Sri Irodikromo and Kurt Nahar, the exhibition also includes work by guest artist Els Tjong Joe Wai.
Please note that Readytex Art Gallery will be participating in this year’s Museum Night Suriname 2023 on October 14, 2023, with as its theme ‘Hoe wij hier ook samenkwamen’ (Regardless of how we came together here). Guests will then be able to visit the gallery in the evening from 6:30 – 9:30 pm, to enjoy art and a variety of special activities related to the commemoration of Chinese Immigration.

In Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) is een speciale nieuwe groepsexpositie te zien, ter gelegenheid van de 170ste herdenking van Chinese Immigratie in Suriname dit jaar. Voor de expositie Hakka Opera in Suriname, haalden de curators Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi en Rinaldo Klas hun inspiratie uit het kenmerkende aanpassingsvermogen van de Chinese Hakka-bevolking die gemigreerd is naar landen overal ter wereld en de boeiende verhalen in hun levendige en kleurrijke opera’s.
“De Hakka Opera is een verhaal. Als curator zie ik mezelf als een verteller, die een verhaal van een opera maakt door deze expositie samen te stellen. De expositie als geheel is de opera en de kunstenaars zijn de spelers,” legt beeldend kunstenaar en curator Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi uit over de titel die zij voor de expositie koos. Co-curator kunstenaar Rinaldo Klas heeft het voorrecht gehad om in China zelf enkele traditionele operavoorstellingen bij te wonen en hij herinnert zich goed hoe die hem boeiden. “Ondanks ik de taal niet versta, kon ik door de bewegingen, kostuums en expressieve mimiek van de artiesten, het verhaal van de opera volgen.”
De Hakka Opera leeft nog steeds binnen de Hakka cultuur. En net zoals de Hakka Chinezen die eerst binnen China en later naar verschillende landen overal ter wereld emigreerden, waar zij zich vervolgens aanpasten aan hun nieuwe omgevingen met een gemak die wel een tweede natuur lijkt, heeft ook de Hakka Opera zich aangepast en kan deze dus heel verschillend zijn afhankelijk van waar het plaatsvindt. Evenzo presenteert de expositie Hakka Opera in Suriname, een uniek verhaal dat een weerspiegeling is van Suriname, een land waarin zoveel verschillende culturen, inclusief de Hakka, zich geadapteerd hebben en met elkaar zijn verweven tot een fascinerend geheel, wat tot uiting komt in het dagelijks leven alsook in de kunst.
Naast de gekozen kunstwerken van de verschillende bij Readytex Art Gallery aangesloten kunstenaars en speciale kunstinstallaties van Sri Irodikromo en Kurt Nahar, toont de expositie ook werk van gastkunstenaar Els Tjong Joe Wai.
Let wel: Readytex Art Gallery doet dit jaar op 14 oktober 2023 ook mee aan de Museumn8 Suriname 2023 met als thema: Hoe wij hier ook samenkwamen. De galerie is op deze avond open van 18:30 tot 21:30 uur zodat bezoekers volop kunnen genieten van kunst en enkele speciale activiteiten in verband met de herdenking van 170 jaar Chinese immigratie.
