The group exhibition titled NON-FICTIE curated by artist and writer Xavier Robles de Medina is now showing in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) and is installed until Saturday, July 27, 2024.
Xavier Robles de Medina: I am proud to present this month at Readytex Art Gallery a group of works that challenge the clichés of art only as poetry, imagination, or pure emotion. This exhibition features works informed by each artist’s commitment to the real, and it is colored by keen political, societal, and historical commentary.
The group exhibition NON-FICTIE coincides with the publication of my artist’s book, Stuart Robles de Medina: Pengel, which is itself a work of non-fiction. The title serves as a slight provocation. The term “non-fiction” is typically associated with literature or writing. On the one hand, it may be perceived as an appropriate complement to the book; on the other, it may be regarded as somewhat incongruous or misplaced within the context of visual art.
As an artist, I have investigated the concept of real-world citation, objectivity, and the limitations of historical and scientific perspectives. This field of enquiry is one that I find intriguing because it is the antithesis of the conventional understanding of art. I have observed similar tendencies in the work of numerous other artists from Suriname that I admire. Many of these artists, whose works I have had the privilege of including in this exhibition, also explore this friction.
NON-FICTIE challenges the conventional boundaries between literature and visual art, offering an exploration of the relationship between truth and representation. By infusing real-world citations within the context of art, these artists demonstrate that art can serve as a potent vehicle for critical commentary and reflection. This selection of Surinamese artists underscores the enduring relevance of art in illuminating the complexities of our world.”

De groepsexpositie met de titel NON-FICTIE is samengesteld door kunstenaar en schrijver Xavier Robles de Medina. De expositie is nu te zien bij Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) tot en met zaterdag 27 juli 2024.
Xavier Robles de Medina: “Ik ben trots om deze maand bij Readytex Art Gallery een groep werken te presenteren die de clichés van kunst als poëzie, verbeelding of pure emotie uitdagen. Deze tentoonstelling bestaat uit werken die geïnformeerd zijn door de toewijding van elke kunstenaar aan de realiteit, en is gekleurd door scherp politiek, maatschappelijk en historisch commentaar.
De groepstentoonstelling NON-FICTIE valt samen met de publicatie van mijn kunstenaarsboek Stuart Robles de Medina: Pengel, dat zelf non-fictie is. De titel dient als een kleine provocatie. De term “non-fictie” wordt meestal geassocieerd met literatuur of schrijfwerk. Aan de ene kant kan het worden gezien als een passende aanvulling op het boek; aan de andere kant kan het worden beschouwd als enigszins onlogisch of misplaatst binnen de context van beeldende kunst.
Als kunstenaar heb ik het concept van citeren uit de echte wereld, objectiviteit en de beperkingen van historische en wetenschappelijke perspectieven onderzocht. Dit onderzoeksterrein vind boeiend omdat het de antithese is van het conventionele begrip van kunst. Ik heb soortgelijke tendensen waargenomen in het werk van vele andere kunstenaars uit Suriname die ik bewonder. Veel van deze kunstenaars, van wie ik het voorrecht heb gehad om hun werk in deze tentoonstelling op te nemen, verkennen deze frictie ook.
NON-FICTIE daagt de conventionele grenzen tussen literatuur en beeldende kunst uit en biedt een verkenning van de relatie tussen waarheid en representatie. Door citaten uit de echte wereld in de context van kunst te plaatsen, laten deze kunstenaars zien dat kunst kan dienen als een krachtig voertuig voor kritisch commentaar en reflectie. Deze selectie van Surinaamse kunstenaars onderstreept de blijvende relevantie van kunst in het blootleggen van de complexiteit van onze wereld.
