‘Nature always proves that she is above everything else’ – Rinaldo Klas, visual artist
The solo exhibition of one of Suriname’s most experienced and established visual artists, Rinaldo Klas, will open in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) on August 1, 2024. In his new solo, titled Whispers .., the artist reasserts his position as a strong advocate for a sustainable relationship between humans and nature. While his imagery is visually captivating, the underlying whispers of caution come through loud and clear in every composition in the collection.
In Whispers .. Rinaldo Klas presents an impressive collection of artworks on canvas and paper, in various dimensions and media. And while the vibrant colors and bold compositions initially keep the eye riveted, the work of this artist ultimately speaks to the soul of every viewer who dares to look beyond the surface. Because indeed, most of the paintings created by Rinaldo are infused with an important environmental message. As a true lover of nature, many of Rinaldo’s compositions show an artfully connected and intertwined combination of flora, fauna and people. He thus portrays the harmonious relationship that he believes is critical to the continued survival of our earth and all of the species that grow and live on it. His work and his beliefs, as well as the characteristic features of many of the faces in his art, are also inspired by the deeply respectful and spiritual bond between the Indigenous and their natural surroundings. He fondly shares a fitting quote that he has heard in various cultural and spiritual circles locally: “Everyone born here, carries an Indigenous person with him/her.”
Other striking paintings in the collection feature the mangrove forests, a critical ecosystem that is key to, among other things, the protection of our coast and the multiple habitats that thrive within. By depicting this life-sustaining environment, Rinaldo hopes to raise awareness about the importance of this part of our country’s natural wealth, which is often ignored as we pursue those resources with a more immediate earning potential. “You can have plenty of oil or gold, but if your coast is destroyed and your land floods, those riches will ultimately mean very little. Nature always proves that she is above everything else.”
So, whether it’s through the animals that look like they’re whispering in people’s ears, or nature itself, with the wind, the water …, the message that the artist conveys resonates clearly. Op 1 augustus 2024 opent er weer een bijzondere solo-expositie in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG). Deze keer staat een van Suriname’s meest ervaren en gevestigde beeldend kunstenaars, Rinaldo Klas, centraal. In zijn nieuwe tentoonstelling, getiteld Whispers .., bevestigt de kunstenaar zijn positie als groot pleitbezorger voor een duurzame relatie tussen mens en natuur. Zijn beeldtaal is een boeiend visueel spel, waar de gefluisterde waarschuwingen luid en duidelijk doorheen klinken.
In Whispers .. presenteert Rinaldo Klas een indrukwekkende collectie kunstwerken op canvas en papier, in verschillende dimensies en media. Hoewel de levendige kleuren en sprekende composities in eerste instantie vooral het oog boeien, raakt het werk van deze kunstenaar uiteindelijk de ziel van elke kijker die verder kijkt dan de oppervlakte. Als echte natuurliefhebber, verwerkt Rinaldo in veel van zijn composities een kunstig met elkaar verbonden en verweven combinatie van flora, fauna en mensen. Zo portretteert hij de harmonieuze relatie die volgens hem cruciaal is voor het voortbestaan van onze aarde en alles dat erop groeit en leeft. Zijn werk en overtuigingen, evenals de karakteristieke kenmerken van veel van de gezichten in zijn kunst, zijn ook geïnspireerd door de diepe, respectvolle en spirituele band tussen de inheemse bevolking en hun natuurlijke omgeving. Hij deelt graag een passend citaat dat hij in verschillende culturele en spirituele kringen lokaal heeft gehoord: “Iedereen die hier geboren wordt, draagt een Inheems persoon met zich mee.”
In andere opvallende schilderijen in de collectie zijn delen van mangrovebossen te zien. Deze vormen een essentieel ecosysteem dat onder andere zorgt voor de bescherming van onze kust en de verschillende diersoorten die er leven. Met deze kunstwerken hoopt Rinaldo het bewustzijn te vergroten over dit belangrijke onderdeel van onze natuurlijke rijkdom. Hier is vaak te weinig aandacht voor, omdat men zich blindstaart op de grondstoffen met een directe verdiencapaciteit. “Je kunt veel olie of goud hebben, maar als je kust wordt vernietigd en je land overstroomt, zal die rijkdom uiteindelijk weinig betekenen. De natuur laat zien dat zij boven alles staat.”
Whispers .. opent in Readytex Art Gallery op donderdag 1 augustus om 19:30 uur. Daarna is de expositie te bezichtigen van vrijdag 2 augustus tot en met zaterdag 28 september, tijdens de reguliere openingstijden van de galerie van maandag t/m vrijdag van 8:00 – 16:30 uur en op zaterdag van 8:30 – 13:30 uur.
